Graduate Nurse Avinash Dmello discovered a passion for mental health working as a support worker while completing his nursing degree. Following graduation, Avinash enrolled in the Mental Health Graduate Nursing Program and worked at Bentley for 12 months, an opportunity that provided exposure to different areas of mental health.

Avinash’s hard work and dedication was recognised recently at the Mental Health Graduate Program Awards, taking out top honours receiving the 2014 Graduate Nurse Award. The Award recognises distinction and outstanding clinical practice.

“My rotations allowed me to gain a holistic understanding of the different areas of mental health and provided first-hand insight into nursing in each area,” says Avinash.

“While at Bentley I worked in older adult mental health, psychosocial rehabilitation and on the open and secure acute wards, which allowed me to keep building on my skills as a mental health nurse.”

Avinash says that completing the program at Bentley was beneficial because he was able to establish a positive rapport with his colleagues and consumers of the service.

“I would like to thank my colleagues who helped me to achieve such a positive outcome during the program,” says Avinash. “The support here has been wonderful, and the mentorship and clinical expertise I have gained exposure to is remarkable. Bentley is a great place to work and it has provided me with so many great opportunities.”
