It’s National Volunteer Week (20-26 May) and there’s no better time to celebrate our dedicated and selfless army of angels, who make such a difference for our consumers and staff every single day.

This year’s theme is "Something for Everyone", which invites all to discover the transformative power of volunteering.

Rick Young is one of our fantastic volunteers at Bentley Health Service Voluntary Transport Association.

After retirement, Rick found he needed to do something with his time and so for near on seven years he has been volunteering at Bentley Health Service (BHS) as a Voluntary Transport (VT) driver.

“I like driving and I used to work at Princess Margaret (now Perth Children’s) Hospital, so I’m used to hospitals, and thought – okay, I’ll give this a shot,” he said smiling.

What the former anaesthetic technician didn’t know was that he would actually fall in love with the work.

“You meet a lot of different people, and they are all nice and grateful you are helping,” he continued.

“Volunteering also gets you out of the house for a bit and all the people I work with here are lovely – all of this keeps me coming back every day.”
