The East Metropolitan Health Service (EMHS) farewelled 2024 in the most memorable way, celebrating the arrival of the first baby at the new Midwifery Birth Centre (MBC) at Bentley Health Service (BHS).

Rafay Salman arrived at 11:28am on 29 December, bringing great joy to parents Mahwish and Salman.

The family’s choice to welcome their son at the MBC was inspired by its unique model of maternity care, which is designed to empower women with options and personalised support throughout their journey.

“I didn’t want interventions, which are bound to happen in the hospital, and a home birth was not an option for us right now,” proud mum Mahwish said.

“I had a wonderful experience – everyone was kind and forthcoming, and they’ve been so excited for us. It’s so sweet.”

Endorsed Midwife Elizabeth Hull, who assisted during the birth, expressed her pride in supporting the family.

“We are very proud to offer women this gold standard model of care and I feel privileged to have been a part of Mahwish’s pregnancy and birth experience,” Elizabeth said.

The milestone was celebrated not just by the family but also by the dedicated midwifery team, who gathered to commemorate this historic moment.

“The whole team was excited about the first birth, so we gathered in the MBC to celebrate soon after the birth and to offer our congratulations to the woman and her family,” Midwifery Manager Carli Beange shared.

“This project is a proud milestone for EMHS in providing a place for midwives to work in a continuity of care model where they are supported to work to their full scope of practice.”

Looking ahead, Carli is optimistic about the MBC, which is the first facility of its kind in Western Australia.

“As we continue to build our team, we aim to support more families and create an environment where every birth is a positive and empowering experience.”

Congratulations to Mahwish, Salman and baby Rafay, as well as the entire MBC team, on this special milestone. Here’s to many more beautiful beginnings!
